HELP!
Why is sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes as popular today as when first created?
Homework Help at 02 October 2010 03:10:26
QHello , i need some help with a few questions that i need to answer for my English coursework about Sherlock Holmes. Any accurate answers much appreciated. Thank you everyone. 1) Who was the inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes? (Show some knowledge of the author here)2) In what format was the character first introduced and how did this contribute to his popularity?
RInspiration for the character of HolmesDoyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.[1] Sir Henry Little-John, Lecturer on Forensic Medicine and Public Health at the Royal College of Surgeons, is also cited as a source for Holmes. Little-John served as Police Surgeon and Medical Officer of Health to the City of Edinburgh, Scotland, providing for Doyle a link between medical investigation and the detection of crime.Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based "consulting detective", Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.Holmes, who first appeared in publication in 1887, was featured in four novels and 56 short stories. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two novels published in serial form appeared between then and 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914.All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Blanched Soldier" and "The Lion's Mane") and two others are written in the third person ("The Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Musgrave Ritual" and "The Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, while Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, each include a long interval of omniscient narration recounting events unknown both to Holmes and to Watson.

What fictional character would you most like to meet and why?
Books & Authors at 05 August 2006 06:08:41
QIf you could meet Sherlock Holmes,Capt Jack Sparrow or Capt Kirk would you? How about Superman, Spider-man or Batman? Let's say that a wizard with huge magical power gave you the opportunity to meet and befriend any fictional character. It doesn't matter if they are animated or book literature. Bugs Bunny or Capt Nemo the choice is yours. Who would you pick and why?
RNick from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - An amazing narrator.Parker from The Bermudez Triangle by Maureen Johnson - He is loyal, he is friendly, and he is hilarious.Alice from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery would have been my friends when I was little.

Books & Authors at 12 February 2008 08:02:47
QI can't read anything that doesn't have literary merit. Ex: Harry Potter, Gossip Girl, Sherlock Holmes, etc. I don't like mystery, magic, wizards, or any crap about space.....It has to be ficiton.
RFirst of all, I must disagree: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories DO have literary merit. Here are some books you may enjoy:-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (or any of her other novels)-Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte-Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte-The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte-Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy-Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert-Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier-Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell-To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee-The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck-The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald-The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway-The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Lerouz-Frankenstein by Mary Shelley-Dracula by Bram Stoker-The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde-The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson-Les Miserables by Victor Hugo-The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas-Little Women by Louisa May Alcott-Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery-The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (or The Lost Prince or The Shuttle)-A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain-Call of the Wild by Jack London-A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (or Oliver Twist or David Copperfield or others of his)-Othello by William Shakespeare (or any other plays by him)-Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantez-Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia WoolfThis is merely a START of a list of classics of literature, but hopefully this will help.

What are some classic books to read?
Books & Authors at 07 October 2010 01:10:57
QWhat are some classic or soon to be classic books to read? I have the complete volumes of Sherlock Holmes. I've read Fahrenheit 451, all the Harry Potters, the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, all of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and some of the Chronicles of Narnia. I'm only 13, so young adult books are fine, but I can read at a very high reading level.Forgot to say I've read the Hobbit, the Fellowship of the Rings, and the Two Towers. I have, but haven't read, the Return of the King.

Sherlock Holmes: The case of Gloria Scott show or movie?
Books & Authors at 16 February 2010 02:02:48
QI need to know from Sherlockians with more knowledge than I, about the flashback period of the Gloria Scott where Sherlock Holmes reportedly decided to take up his position as an unofficial detective; from which means that he was given such advice when deducing trivialities about Trev's father. All I need to know about it is, has the situation of the Gloria Scott ever been made into a movie or television show? (other than Sherlock Holmes of the badly animated 22nd century)If anyone can think of a television adaptation of this story incorporated into another Sherlock Holmes show or movie, let me know.
RThere does not appear to have been an adaptation of this particular story although the early TV adaptations often mixed plots so it is possible that elements from it have been used.

Which Hall Of Fame class was the greatest collection of talent in NHL history?
Hockey at 08 March 2008 04:03:10
QI've wondered like nobody's business since this past induction if the aforementioned group was the greatest class for the Hockey Hall Of Fame. Was there an even better class than Jim Gregory, Ron Francis, Mark Messier, Scott Stevens, and Al MacInnis?
R1972 was a far superior year with Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Bernie Geoffrion, Harry Holmes, and Hooley Smith in my opinion
