I devised my own survey, mailed to over 600 of the oldest U.S. television stations, to locate a dissappearing American Film heritage: 16 mm TV news film.

Results: 25% of stations returning surveys report retaining some amount of 16 mm TV news film. Amounts varied from as little as 2 reels to as many as 10,000. 12% report transferring it first to videotape, then destroying it. Contrary to popular anecdotes, only about 33% could say they actually threw it out. About 25% reported they had no idea what happened to it.

This is the first study of its kind.

    I defended my thesis September 27, 2007.
