What ever happened to the defendant in Cohen v. California?
Law & Ethics at 17 March 2009 06:03:40
QI've been searching everywhere and i can't find any information on the defendant in cohen v. california Paul Robert Cohen. Can anyone help me with the information? thanks.I meant after the trial... i know what happened to him during the trial... thanks though
ROn April 26, 1968, Paul Robert Cohen, 19, was arrested for wearing a jacket with the words "Fuck the Draft" inside the Los Angeles Courthouse. Inside the court room he had the jacket folded over his arm, only after exiting the room he put the jacket on and was then arrested. He was convicted of violating section 415 of the California Penal Code, which prohibited "maliciously and willfully disturb[ing] the peace or quiet of any neighborhood or person [by] offensive conduct."The conviction was upheld by the California Court of Appeal, which held that "offensive conduct" means "behavior which has a tendency to provoke others to acts of violence or to in turn disturb the peace." After the California Supreme Court denied review, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a writ of certiorari.[edit] The Court's decisionThe Court, by a vote of 6-3, per Justice John Marshall Harlan II, overturned the appellate court's ruling. "[A]bsent a more particularized and compelling reason for its actions," it said, "the State may not, consistently with the First and Fourteenth Amendments, make the simple public display of this single four-letter expletive a criminal offense."In the opinion Justice Harlan famously wrote "one man's vulgarity is another's lyric." (That quotation was later criticized by Robert Bork as "moral relativism.") [1]Harlan’s arguments can be constructed in three major points: First, states (California) cannot censor their citizens in order to make a “civil” society. Second, knowing where to draw the line between harmless heightened emotion and vulgarity can be difficult. Thirdly, people bring passion to politics and vulgarity is simply a side effect of a free exchange of ideas—no matter how radical they may be.[edit] Blackmun's dissentIn a dissenting opinion, Justice Harry Blackmun, joined by Burger and Black, suggested that Cohen's wearing of the jacket in the courthouse was not speech but conduct (an "absurd and immature antic") and therefore not protected by the First Amendment. The second paragraph of Blackmun's dissent noted that the Supreme Court of California construed section 415 in In re Bushman 1 Cal.3d 767, 83 Cal.Rptr. 375 (Cal, 1970), which was decided after the Court of Appeal of California's decision in Cohen v. California and the Supreme Court of California's denial of review. Blackmun wrote that the case "ought to be remanded to the California Court of Appeal for reconsideration in the light of the subsequently rendered decision by the State's highest tribunal in Bushman."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohen_v._California

How do you get tickets for bravo's watch what happens live with andy cohen?
Reality Television at 04 December 2010 05:12:04
QI am a huge fan of the show on bravo titled Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. He seems to be talking to an audience. How do you get tickets to be in the audience? I have tried emailing and facebook.
RI'm a huge WWHL fan too :) never miss it since the very first one.I do not think that there is an actual studio audience. The clubhouse is very small and the people that you hear in the background or that Andy refers to are the production people that work on the show as well as people that come with whoever he is talking to that night. Like Sunday night, Adrienne's husband Paul was there...I too, follow Andy on Facebook and I have never seen any reference made toward actually being in the studio when they do the show. It would be pretty sweet though. He is so funny...

Can [Should] mathematics be done without any reference to infinity?
Philosophy at 03 April 2008 03:04:57
Q."No one shall expel us from the Paradise that Cantor has created." -- David HilbertPlease elaborate! This is also a tribute to Kurt Gödel and Paul J. Cohen for having helped freed "infinity"..Please Note: The Thumbs down are NOT from me. :-( :-( ... I thank you all for your thoughtful answers.
RMath without infinity is limited, but I am humbled By a David Hilbert reader. I cannot pretend to understand math at those levels.

Is there a way to find out if a last name is specifically Jewish?
Genealogy at 09 September 2009 03:09:36
QI have a friend whose last name is Paul. I started thinking he is Jewish, but I don't know how to ask (as I don't think it really matters; am just interested.) Thanks!
RCohen is Jewish, unless they converted sometime between the middle ages, when people started using surnames, and today. The rest can be Jewish or not.Just ask him "Hey Paul - do you guys go to church?"

What was the hardest mathematical question solved by hand?
Mathematics at 21 April 2010 01:04:45
QYou don't have to give me the whole problem, I just need a name, or something, to look it up.
RYou're not going to get a good answer to this question, because there isn't one. It's not clear what you mean by "solved by hand", but even if that were well understood, there is a bigger problem: there is no way to measure how difficult a mathematical problem is to solve. It took Whitehead and Russell hundreds of pages of their "Principia Mathematica" to prove that 1 + 1 = 2; does that make it a hard problem? If you are interested in something important that is found difficult by most people, you might check out Paul Cohen's brilliant proof of the independence of the Continuum Hypothesis and the Axiom of Choice from the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms of set theory.

Which composer/ pianist was the first to feature saxophones in a symphony?
Classical at 15 November 2009 02:11:16
QI cant seem to find the answer, I know generally the Sax is a young instrument but it usually isnt incorporated into symphony?
RThe first work with the title Symphony using a Sax could be Copland Symphony No. 1 composed 1928. There were other work using the sax in the orchestra before that time like Berg: Der Wein of 1920.See the article by the expert player Paul Cohen.http://www.classicsax.com/asi/vsr8.pdfThe most famous works are Gershwin; Rhapsody in Blue, 1924 and Ravel: Bolero 1929 each using 3 saxophones. Also check the Forums at The North American Saxophone Alliance.http://www.saxalliance.org/
