RHi:It's about 3 hours to the telethon as I type - go to http://www.mda.org - within 5 minutes of the show starting on TV, the online feed will start - you can of course refresh before 9:05 PM US Eastern tonight to see if the stream is up before then - but whenever you tune in - make sure you have a high-speed connection, and most importantly, download the latest free version of RealPlayer at http://www.real.com (Copy and paste!)Hope I was helpful!Telethon "splash" page: where the stream ishttp://www.mda.org/telethon/2010Telethon/ (Copy and paste!)

Ask and the Answer
Will Sidney Crosby be better than number 99 at the end of his career ?
Hockey at 08 June 2008 04:06:59
QWhat do you guys think ?
RIf you are going by how many points Crosby will score in his career, provided he stays healthy, he will not come close to Gretzky. That is because this is a different era. The '80s were the days of horrible goaltending and no defensive systems. BUT... I am a firm believer in the fact that every generation is better than its predecessor. I think we all can agree that Crosby, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, etc. would be able to skate circles around Howe, Richard, Bobby Hull, etc. The game evolves. In the nineties goalies started getting better because they started facing guys like Gretzky, Lemieux, and Yzerman. If you watch old '80s game film, its amazing the goals that actually scored. There is no way in heck those same goals go in on a Junior goalie. But these guys were trailblazers of a "new era" of offense. No one was used to this type of hockey and it took over the '80s. A lot of back hand shots, on ice shots... they just slip through the goalie. This all started to change once the butterfly technique came around. Don't know who started it... I'm assuming Patrick Roy. Now goalies were some of the best athletes on the team, can't say that about '80s goalies. This soon became the norm. Then you start to see the defensive systems too. Both lead to the dramatic drop in goals per game. But it is only a matter of time before the new era begins. We are seeing goal scorers like Ovechkin and Kovalchuk dominate this relatively new breed of goalie. . Now we are also seeing amazing puck handling of players like Pavel Datsyuk. Great passers like Crosby and Thornton. The main difference between today's superstars and Gretzky and Lemieux era stars, is the speed at which these players operate. These guys didn't play at blazing speeds like today's players do. Hockey is evolving constantly. Goalies evolve to learn how to stop Gretzky's and Lemieux's. Skaters evolve to combat new goalies and defensive systems. You can't tell me that Gretzky and Lemieux played anywhere near the speed of Ovechkin, Crosby, or Datsyuk. The reason all these players, old and new, are SO successful is because they are ahead of their time. THAT is what makes a superstar in hockey. No doubt if someone invents a time machine and brings back Crosby, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Thornton, Iginla, and many others, that they would easily put of Gretzky like numbers in the mid '80s, my guess is that they would put up more like 300 points. Players are a product of their surroundings. They adapt to what ever the obstacles are.In reality comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. The only real way to compare the two is to see how far above every one else they are in their own era. That is what sets Gretzky apart. He has more assists in his career than anyone has points. So in answer to your question... Yes Crosby IS better than Gretzky... but so are all the superstars in todays NHL. No, nobody will ever break Gretzky's scoring records. These guys came to the NHL 20 years to late.

QWhat are some quotes from philosophers about justice and/or equality?
RJustice may be blind, but she has very sophisticated listening devices. ~Edgar ArgoAlthough the legal and ethical definitions of right are the antithesis of each other, most writers use them as synonyms. They confuse power with goodness, and mistake law for justice. ~Charles T. Sprading, Freedom and its FundamentalsLaws are like cobwebs, which may catch small flies, but let wasps and hornets break through. ~Jonathan Swift, A Critical Essay upon the Faculties of the Mind, 1707Injustice is relatively easy to bear; it is justice that hurts. ~H.L. MenckenBTW this is one of my favorite- "When you go into court you are putting your fate into the hands of twelve people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty." ~Norm Crosby ( lol )

What do you think of the phrase "Justice is Bling?"?
Law & Ethics at 27 May 2006 10:05:14
QSomeone on another question entered a typo when typing "Justice is Blind". But I think this new phrase rather nicely sums up our legal system. The more bling you have, the more justice you get.
RClever typo: The more money you got, the better lawyers you can get & thus possibly get a lesser charge in court. At least that's what it appears like seeing the news & watching Law & Order episodes... (I don't have any personal experience to this). Some quotes to ponder:Justice is incidental to law and order. ~John Edgar HooverWhen you go into court you are putting your fate into the hands of twelve people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty. ~Norm CrosbyAlthough the legal and ethical definitions of right are the antithesis of each other, most writers use them as synonyms. What makes a great poet great?
Poetry at 02 February 2012 12:02:20
QI have my favorites among those considered great poets. My absolute favorite is Rilke, and I'm also a fan of Eliot, Swinburne, and Tennyson. Their poems have something that just touches you, pushes your heart from the inside out until it's bruised. But you know, sometimes I come across a piece of amateur poetry that has the same effect on me.So why is Eliot known by everyone who's ever graduated high school, while some of these amateur poets are unknown? What makes a great poet great?
RWhen Ezra Pound and T S Eliot arrived in England - shortly before the outbreak of the Great War - mainstream English poetry would have seemed isolated and quaint to anyone familiar with what had been happening on the continent of Europe. The older generation of poets - Swinburne, Rossetti, Morris and others - were still writing about knights in armour and Greek gods and goddesses afrolic in the mead. There was even a younger generation of writers - Noyes, AE, and sometimes even Yeats - who seemed stuck in a medieval notion of Europe, a medieval notion of reality, and a medieval notion of how people spake. In France the poetry of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Laforgue - and even Jarry - had already shown how poetry could speak of the modern world, and even look at modern ideas in science and sociolinguistics. For anyone well read in European literature, London in 1910 would have seemed like a gentleman's club were everyone listened to Bing Crosby - adrift in a world full of the Velvet Underground.Eliot's Prufrock (first published in 1915) brought English literature screaming and kicking into the twentieth century. It wasn't the first modern poem - Appolinaire's Zone appeared in 1912, and is even more experimental. But the French were used to reading modern poetry, most English readers had never seen anything like Prufrock.By the 1940's, Eliot and Pound's modernist and European way of writing poetry had become the norm. It was the poetry of the old, blinkered, conservatives that now seemed odd and eccentric:- Coventry Patmore, Wilfred Gibson, and Lascelles Abercrombie were still selling (in some cases outselling more modernist poets); but people were defensive about reading Edwardian or Georgian poetry. People avoided mentioning that they read Sir Edward Marsh - at least in educated company. So Eliot is considered one of our greatest poets because he permanently changed the way most people thought about poetry. This is the point he makes in the title of his collection of literary essays The Sacred Grove. The Sacred Grove was the grove at Nemi, where you became High Priest by murdering the previous High Priest. Eliot had come to murder Tennyson and Browning, and had largely succeeded.......Eliot (or possibly Eliot and Pound together) belongs to a tiny group of poets who have altered the course of poetry. You can rank him alongside Wordsworth, Dryden, Milton, Shakespeare, Spenser, and Chaucer; or with Villon, Marot, Ronsard, Malherbe, Boileau, Hugo, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Appolinaire ..... but relatively few poets are dealchangers the way these all are.It would be difficult to suggest that Tennyson or Swinburne had anything like the same effect on the poetry of their eras; both followed fashion rather than set it. Tennyson and Swinburne are important because they are so typical of their era; it would be more accurate to acknowledge that the era Eliot began is typical of Eliot.Rilke is more difficult. It isn't even easy to say whether Rilke belongs to German poetry or to Czech - since he has close links with both. Rilke, like Kafka, and also like both the Capeks, is number one in a field of one.But the reason that all of these are major poets is that they wrote many indispensible poems. They didn't write a single great poem, or a small handful (like Henry King, or Charles Wolfe, or Raymond Queneau) - major poets write bodies of work:- dozens of poems spread over decades that bring you into contact with a whole society. The shiver of a real poem is never a wasted experience. There are many poets who can do that a half dozen times, and the world is a better place for them. But a great poet gives you enough poems to get right inside his head; to see the world through his eyes: he alters who you are.It is like the difference between a really good one night stand, and a life of being in love with the same person. They are both good, in their own way.But only one changes you.
