Máximo Gómez

Máximo Gómez y Báez was a Major General in the Ten Years' War (1868-1878) and Cuba's military commander in that country's War of Independence (1895-1898). Gómez was born in the town of Baní, in the province of Peravia, in the Dominican Republic. When he was a teenager, he joined in the battles against the Haitian invasions of Faustine Soulouque in the 1850s. He was trained as an officer of the Spanish Army at the Zaragoza Military Academy.
