who are some interesting people during the roaring twenties and great depression?
History at 19 May 2008 02:05:07
Qlike al capone and does anyone know the names of the couple that robbed places together during that time period?
RThe couple you're thinking of is likely Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow) tho there were other less well known but equally interesting bandit couples of the period, such as Ed and Cecelia Cooney ("The Bobbed-Haired Bandit") and Bennie Dickson and his wife "Sure Shot" Stella.Other interesting gangsters and outlaws of the period, besides Al Capone, included John Dillinger, Dutch Schultz, Legs Diamond, Mad Dog Coll, Lucky Luciano, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson. The gangster era also brought the rise of the FBI and made celebrities of J. Edgar Hoover and Melvin Purvis.Political figures: Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Huey Long, Al Smith, Tom Pendergast, Thomas E. Dewey. Internationally, Mussolini, Stalin, Lenin, Chiang Kai Shek, Hitler, and Franco all rose to prominence in this period. Will Rogers was a much beloved humorist, entertainer and commentator of the period who died in a plane crash along with famed aviator Wiley Post.Other aviation heroes:Charles Lindbergh, first man to fly solo across the Atlantic, whose son was later kidnapped and murdered by Bruno Hauptmann. And Amelia Earhart, Lindbergh's female counterpart who disappeared in the Pacific. And General Billy Mitchell, who got court-martialed over his defiance of the War Department in insisting that the future of warfare lay in airplanes capable of bombing and sinking enemy ships.Popular sports figures included "Shoelace Joe" Jackson, Babe Ruth, Knute Rockne, Bobby Jones, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis.Entertainers of the day included Lon Chaney Sr. and Lon Chaney Jr., John Barrymore, Charles Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Al Jolson, Laurel and Hardy, Mae West, Boris Karloff, the Marx Brothers, and Shirley Temple.Walter Winchell and Edward R. Murrow were a couple of well known news comentators.Writers of the day included F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Theodore Dreiser, and John Dos Passos. The list of interesting people from this period is truly endless:Henry Ford, Poncho Villa, John D. Rockefeller, William Randolph Hearst, Clarence Darrow, Samuel Liebowitz, Mother Jones, Alice B. Toklas, Woody Guthrie, Django Reinhardt, Robert Johnson, W.C. Fields, etc. One really can't even begin to scratch the surface in any category. Hundreds of names could be added to all of the above.

what are some 20th century medical discoveries and how did it effect the United States?
History at 02 April 2010 08:04:16
Q5 medical discoveries of the 20th century will be sufficient.
RBAND-AIDBandages for wounds had been around since ancient times, but an easy-to-use dressing with an adhesive was invented by Earle Dickson (a cotton buyer at the Johnson & Johnson company). Dickson perfected the BAND-AID® in 1920, making a small, sterile adhesive bandage for home use. Dickson invented the BAND-AID® for his wife, who had many kitchen accidents and needed an easy-to-use wound dressing. BLOOD BANKThe idea of a blood bank was pioneered by Dr. Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950). Dr. Drew was an American medical doctor and surgeon who started the idea of a blood bank and a system for the long term preservation of blood plasma (he found that plasma kept longer than whole blood). His ideas revolutionized the medical profession and saved many, many lives. Dr. Drew set up and operated the blood plasma bank at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, NY. Drew's project was the model for the Red Cross' system of blood banks, of which he became the first director.POLIO VACCINEJonas Salk (1914-1995) was a research physician who formulated a vaccine against the devastating disease polio. Poliomyelitis, also called infantile paralysis, had crippled thousands of children during an epidemic that hit the world during the 1940's and 1950's. It is estimated that one of every 5,000 people (mostly children) fell victim to polio. Some victims were totally paralyzed and need to live in "iron lungs" (a large apparatus that helped the patient breathe). Salk's developed his vaccine in 1947, while working at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. The vaccine was made from killed polio virus. In 1955, after many trials of the new vaccine, the vaccine was made public, and put an end to the polio epidemic. ARTIFICIAL HEART:Dutch-born medical researcher Willem J. Kolff invented the first artificial heart but it was an American doctor Robert Jarvik who in 1982 completed the design of the first permanently-implantable artificial heart- the Jarvik-7 made of Dacron polyester, plastic, and aluminum with an internal power system that ensured it consistently beat at least 100,000 times a day pumping blood through the body. The Jarvik devices were implanted to sustain patients waiting for transplants.PACEMAKER:Canadian electrical engineer John Hopps invented the world's first cardiac pacemaker in 1950. His device was too large to be implanted inside of the human body but an improved version was designed by New York medical researcher Wilson Greatbatch in the late 1950's making it implantable and powered by a corrosion-free lithium batteryCPR:In the late 1950s, Dr. Peter Safar invented cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR with the development of the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation) of resuscitation, including "mouth-to-mouth" resuscitation.ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES:The first oral contraceptive, Enovid, was developed by Polish-born chemist Frank B. Colton in the late 1960s. The synthetic hormone pill prevents ovulation or the release of new eggs in a woman's body thus preventing conception.

What is the origin of the term "Whodunit?" and the phrase "The Butler Did It"?
Words & Wordplay at 19 October 2007 03:10:10
QI know they are used today in reference to mystery stories. Who used them first, under what circumstances?
RA whodunit or whodunnit (for "Who done it?" and sometimes referred to as a Golden Age Mystery novel) is a complex, plot-driven variety of the detective story in which the puzzle is paramount. The reader is provided with clues from which the identity of the perpetrator of the crime may be deduced before the solution is revealed in the final pages of the book. The investigation is usually conducted by an eccentric amateur or semi-professional detective. The locked-room mystery is a specialized kind of a whodunit. The whodunit flourished during the so-called "Golden Age" of detective fiction, during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when it was the predominant mode of crime writing. Many of the best writers of whodunits in this period were British -- notably Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Josephine Tey, Michael Innes, Nicholas Blake, Christianna Brand and Edmund Crispin. Others -- S. S. Van Dine, John Dickson Carr, and Ellery Queen -- were American, but imitated the "English" style. Still others, such as Rex Stout, Clayton Rawson, and Earl Derr Biggers, aimed for a more "American" style.Mary Roberts Rinehart (August 12, 1876-September 22, 1958) was a prolific author often called the American Agatha Christie. "Dorothy B. Hughes, crime critic and novelist, says she 'has been and continues to be' the most important American woman mystery writer." She is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it", although she did not actually use the phrase herself, and also considered to have invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing.
