RYes, that is standard procedure. Whenever an officer shoots someone, s/he is placed on paid, administrative leave (usually two weeks) while the police department conducts an investigation to determine whether or not the shooting was lawful. If the investigation determines that the shooting was lawful, the officer returns to work. If it is determined that the shooting was unlawful, the officer will face disciplinary action that usually results in the officer being fired from the department and being tried for whatever crime s/he committed.
