Hilary R. W. Johnson

REthiopia was an independent state ruled by various native dynasties for more than four thousand years until 1936, when it was invaded and subjugated by Italy, which occupied it until 1941. Emperor Haile Selassie reentered his country on May 5 of that year. Between 1867 and that time Great Britain, Italy and other European nations had interfered with Ethiopia's affair numerous times, but the government survived.Liberia was proclaimed a free republic in 1847, with the American-born and mixed-race Joseph Jenkins Roberts as President. The first ten presidents were all born in the United States, but many of them had grown up in Liberia. Hilary R. W. Johnson, the eleventh president, was born in Liberia to a family which had migrated from the United States. Most presidents following him were native born, but with recent relations to the United States or the islands of the Caribbean. The first president I can determine to have come from the native tribes was subsequent to 1945.
