The actions of the Supreme Court under John Marshall led to?
Politics at 29 December 2009 05:12:22
QThe actions of the Supreme Court under John Marshall led toA. stronger state governments.B. stronger central government.C. equality of men.D. increased legislative power.
Rb.Scholars have long agreed that John Marshall occupies a preeminent place in the growth of American constitutionalism. Marshall contributed significantly to constitutional law and cemented the institutional role of the Supreme Court as a coequal branch of government. Yet, despite numerous studies (see, for instance, Herbert A. Johnson, The Chief Justiceship of John Marshall, 1801–1835. Columbia, S.C.: University of South Carolina Press, 1997, and G. Edward White, The Marshall Court and Cultural Change, 1815–35. New York: Macmillan, 1988), Marshall has remained a surprisingly elusive subject for historians. The classic study by Albert J. Beveridge (The Life of John Marshall, 4 vols. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1916–19) is marred by both inaccuracies and undue partisanship. To complicate matters, Marshall’s constitutional philosophy has too often been viewed in a simplistic manner designed to validate twentieth-century notions of judicial review and enlarged governmental authority

What is the difference between assassination and murdered?
Other - Politics & Government at 22 May 2006 11:05:05
QPresident Kennedy was assassinated. John Lennon was murdered. I never saw it written that Rev. King was assassinated, he too was murdered. Sadat was assassinated and Versace was murdered? What factors determine which word is appropriate?
Rfrom what I can see, important public figures, killed for political reasons, are assassinated whereas murder refers to the rest of us. Take a look at the follwoing defintions, they have some good distinctions... hope that helpedDefinitions of assassination on the Web: * character assassination: an attack intended to ruin someone's reputation * murder of a public figure by surprise attack wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn * In its most common use, assassination has come to mean the killing of an important person. An assassin — one who carries out the assassination — is usually motivated by ideological or political reasons. Other motivations may be money in the case of a hitman; opposition to a person's beliefs or belief systems in the case of a fanatic; orders from a government that are often carried about by a subversive agent such as a spy; or loyalty to a competing leader or group. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination * [country or state]--[city] www.loc.gov/rr/print/tgm1/app-b.html * of the Coptic prime minister Butrus Ghali by a young Muslim nationalist. One of its repercussions was a new Coptic mistrust of the Muslim Egyptian nationalists. A Coptic Congress met in Asyut in 1911 to voice specifically Coptic political demands, which were rejected by a rival Muslim Congress convened in Heliopolis that year. 6 www.bartleby.com/67/1374.html * The killing of a political leader or other public figure. regentsprep.org/Regents/global/vocab/topic_alpha.cfm * Two Presidents of the United States have been assassinated,—Abraham Lincoln by J Wilkes Booth, and James A. Garfield by Guiteau. The latter was called a crank or half crazy. There has never been any real conspiracy for assassination in this country, on a large scale. Booth had confederates, but represented no secret cabal, like the Russian Nihilists. www.people.virginia.edu/~rmf8a/gaskell/poldict.htmDefinitions of murder on the Web: * kill intentionally and with premeditation; "The mafia boss ordered his enemies murdered" * unlawful premeditated killing of a human being by a human being * mangle: alter so as to make unrecognizable; "The tourists murdered the French language" wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn * Murder is both a legal and a moral term, that are not always coincident. It may be legal to kill, but still murder in the moral sense. Opponents of the death penalty argue that it is simply murder by the state. Proponents of limited government argue that moral murder is never legal murder unless and until the government meets the limits and standards required of it, such as due process, proof beyond a reasonable doubt, trial by jury, appellate review, etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder * Murder! a 1930 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock based on a novel and play called Enter Sir John by Clemence Dane and Helen Simpson. The film stars Herbert Marshall, Nora Baring. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder! * Murder is the name of a single by British group New Order. Released on the Factory Benelux imprint in 1984, it is an instrumental piece, but also contains samples from films such as and Caligula. The b-side is an instrumental version of the previous single by the group, "Thieves Like Us". The sleeve art is a "night-time" version of the sleeve art from the previous single. Both tracks are available on 1987's compilation, Substance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_(single) * 1. The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice. 2. Slang. Something that is very uncomfortable, difficult, or hazardous: The rush hour traffic is murder. 3. The collective noun for crows. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_(disambiguation) * The willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being by another. www.securityoncampus.org/schools/research/doe/97402-a.html * The unlawful killing of a human being with deliberate intent to kill: (1) murder in the first degree is characterized by premeditation; (2) murder in the second degree is characterized by a sudden and instantaneous intent to kill or to cause injury without caring whether the injury kills or not. brandonlclark.com/glossary.html * Includes homicide, non-negligent manslaughter, and voluntary homicide. Does not include attempted murder (which is classified as felony assault), negligent homicide, involuntary homicide, or vehicular manslaughter (which are classified as "other violent offenses"). www.pretrialrelease.com/pretrial-release-terms.htm * the unlawful and malicious or premeditated killing of a person securityproducts.tripod.com/Glossary.html * refers to the killing of another person www.mtholyoke.edu/offices/dps/logs/logdefin.shtml * is the intentional taking of someone's life. Manslaughter is an accidental killing or a killing in the heat of passion. Murder is punishable by life in the penitentiary, manslaughter by 20 years. www.msda9.com/grandjury/gjterms.htm * The crime of homicide committed either intentionally or with wicked disregard for the consequences. hjem.get2net.dk/safsaf/glossary.html * is the intentional killing of a human being. It includes causing serious physical injury leading to the death of a human being. What are some of the scholars mentioned in the article: The Study of Organizations and Organizing Since 1945?
Homework Help at 28 June 2009 03:06:19
QWhat are some of the scholars mentioned in the article: The Study of Organizations and Organizing Since 1945? The article's author is James G. March.
RI cut and pasted these paragraphs from the first few pages of the article, which I found online at:http://oss.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/28/1/9.pdf?ijkey=IVdQ1XHbEc1n6&keytype=ref&siteid=spossThe easily recognizable ancestors of modern organizations scholarship include such notable European social scientists as Emile Durkheim, Alfred Marshall, Robert Michels, Gaetano Mosca, Vilfredo Pareto, Adam Smith and Max Weber. They were supplemented by early European organizations engineers such as Henri Fayol and Lyndall Urwick. Some North American writers, such as Luther Gulick, Elton Mayo (actually an Australian for most of his life), John Dewey, Mary Parker Follett and Frederick Taylor were pioneers, but the field’s pre-Second World War origins were primarily European. The postwar North American contributors to the study of organizations included a long list of scholars, not only refugees from Central Europe but also such other academics as Alex Bavelas, Richard M. Cyert, Robert Dubin, AlvinW. Gouldner, Mason Haire, Harold H. Kelley, Charles E. Lindblom, SeymourM. Lipset, Robert Merton, John Meyer, Roy Radner, Leonard R. Sayles, W. Richard Scott, Philip Selznick, Martin Shubik, Herbert A. Simon, William H.Starbuck, Arthur L. Stinchcombe, James Thompson, Karl E. Weick, Harrison White and William F. Whyte. For the most part, they identified with, and were viewed as part of, the effort to make postwar studies of human behavior and institutions more scientific. In the first two decades after the Second World War, a number of distinguished European scholars interested in organizations established themselves: for example, Sune Carlsson, Michel Crozier, Walter Goldberg, David Hickson,Knut Dahl Jacobsen, Edith Penrose, Derek Pugh, Claude Riveline. The Aston Group and the Tavistock Institute produced both research and new scholars. During the 1970s and 1980s, numerous vigorous research centers emerged, and numerous scholars interested in organizations became visible: for example, Mats Alvesson, Nils Brunsson, John Child, Stewart Clegg, Barbara Czarniawska, Lars Engwall, Erhard Friedberg, Anthony Hopwood, Håkon Håkonsson, Alfred Kieser, Cornelius J. Lammers, Bruno Latour, Nikolas Luhmann, Renate Mayntz, Johan P. Olsen, Andrew Pettigrew, Jean-Claude Thoenig.

What's the name of the movie that shows a commercial jet in outer space?
Movies at 08 August 2010 12:08:10
QI know it's from the 80's, but I can't think of the name of it. I would like to rent it on Netflix.
RStarflight: The Plane That Couldn't Land (1983 TV miniseries)starring Lee Majors, Hal Linden, Lauren Hutton, Ray Milland, Gail Strickland, George DiCenzo, Tess Harper, Terry Kiser, Michael Sacks, Jocelyn Brando (Marlon's sister), Herbert Jefferson Jr., Robert Englund, Kirk Cameron, Marshall R. TeagueIMDb synopsis:This is the story of Starflight One, the world's first "hypersonic plane," which flies faster and higher than any other commercial jet. On the night of its maiden flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, a freak accident incolving an unauthorized rocket launch sends Starflight One out of the atmosphere and into a decaying orbit around the Earth. With no heat shielding and limited oxygen, it is up to the bravery of the crew and the ingenuity of NASA and the plane's designers to save the passengers trapped on board. Be aware that there is a version of this movie chopped to less than two hours and renamed "Starflight One". This version has been showing up on TV.

Do you know the title of this 1940s film according to this description?
Movies at 29 March 2010 07:03:40
QThere is a 1940s movie about a couple who believe they are young and beautiful even though he is scarred and she is not beautiful. They stay in a cottage or Inn in the country. They carved their innitials on the glass window of the cottage. The lead actor looks like Robert Montgomery.
RThe Enchanted Cottage (1945)starring Dorothy McGuire, Robert Young, Herbert Marshall, Mildred Natwick, Spring ByingtonIMDb synopsis:A rather plain girl and a scarred ex-GI meet at the cottage where she works as a maid and where he was to spend his honeymoon prior to his accident. The two develop a bond and agree to marry, more out of loneliness than love. The romantic spirit of the cottage overtakes them. They soon begin to look beautiful. Here's the movie trailer:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKted5j6ZpI&feature=relatedHere's a clip from this classic:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbVhzRxTbLk&feature=relatedI've seen this film many times over the years, and it sometimes shows up on TCM.

What are some examples in history when people have come together to accomplish a goal that benefited humanity?
Other - Social Science at 06 June 2012 02:06:38
QWhat are some examples in history when people have come together to accomplish a goal that benefited humanity?
RThe International Ice Patrol was created after the Titanic disaster to prevent any repeat due to drifting bergs. The CARE package campaign of the latter 20th century helped many people in many nations. After WWI a similar program fed many European children as private charitable relief in a program organized by Herbert Hoover (which ended up being a major qualification for his run for President in 1928.)The Marshall Plan rebuilt western Europe after WWII, and was a bi-partisan US program of aid.UNICEF and UNESCO are sometimes good examples.Rotary Clubs International has a project to immunize the world against polio, and has helped that almost happen. The Salvation Army, Red Cross and Red Crescent have provided aid in disasters and wars for many years. Disaster relief is a very good example, and happens regularly to mitigate the effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, mudslides, floods, hurricanes/monsoons/tornadoes etc.Doctors Without Borders does a lot of good work in challenging areas of the world.
