In Britain if you have a child first, and then get married afterwards you can legitimize the child in the eyes of the law, but the child may not meet peerage regulations to inherit the title. I'll give you an example using an Earl, since I can't think of one with a Duke right now.================For example, (age 85) George Lascelles is the 7th Earl of Harewood and is the first cousin to Queen Elizabeth. He is #40 in line of succession to the throne and is on the "rich list" with a net worth of 55 million GBP. His oldest son (age 58) is David Lascelles, Viscount Lascelles . RMost of the parliaments of countries with royal families in Europe have passed laws limiting the line of succession to certain descendants. At the same time they usually have eliminated rules that prefer or exclude males. These laws were passed in the last few decades so there is usually less than 20 people in line. --------Denmark has only 8 people in the line of succession. The queen's 2 sons, their four children. After that comes her sister and her first cousin. Her sister's children were not raised in Denmark but rather in Germany. According to the decree of the father, they are not eligible for the throne. The cousin has no children and she is age 73. --------However, UK has not passed a law since 1701, and it specifies that only descendents of Sophia of Hanover, grandaughter of James I, are eligible for the throne. She now has 5000 living descendents, but many of them are Catholic, and many are illegitimate or descended from illegitimate ancestry. There is probably about 3000 people on the list that are eligible. In theory if all these people are dead parliament would have to pass a new law. It doesn't automatically continue to include everyone on earth.-------------In Monaco if you have children first, and then you marry, the children become eligible for the throne. Princess Stephanie has two illegitimate children, but she married their father for about a year, so they are eligible. Her older brother, Prince Albert also has two illegitimate children, but he has never married one of their mothers. In the unlikely event that he marries one of these women before he dies, his child will become his heir. In the UK there is no similar rule. In fact, some men have married the mother of their child and "legitimated" him, but the child is still ineligable for the throne. ------------------Someone attempted to go through all the descendents of Sophia and decide which ones are illegitimate and which ones are Catholic for a Wikipedia article. The list has roughly 1500 names but is ACKNOWLEDGE TO BE INCOMPLETE. In fact the very last person on the list was not calculated. (So I can't answer your question). Catherine Oxenberg is one of the best known Americans on the list of succession, and her lineage was skipped over in the Wikipedia article. ------------------The Queen's grandfather, George V, is the one who changed the royal family name to Windsor in 1917. One of these descendents is Prince Philip (the Queen's husband), so Prince Philip is in line for the throne (almost #500).---------------------------------------------You keep backing up generation by generation until you get to Sophia. The list is never officially worked out this far. It would be difficult to keep track of since people are marrying Catholics and becoming Catholic. People like Catherine Oxenburg just say they are on the list without giving a number. Catherine Oxenburg portrayed Diana, twice in TV movies, and they use it as part of the promotion. She is not a descendant of Victoria, but of George II (ten generations ago).-----------------At this point in history with Queen Elizabeth having 12 descendants, they could safely pass a law limiting the line of succession to only her descendants. However, they are not likely to pass a law for that reason alone. It would probably be in conjunction with new rules about female succession, or making religion irrelevent. If Prince William has a baby girl first, I imagine that public sentiment will be so strong that they will pass a law immediately putting her higher than any brothers. ---------------------------The "King Ralph" scenario in the 1991 American film comedy, where a freak accident kills everyone in the line of succession up to an American schlub who works in a bar would be difficult. Not everyone in the line up to about 500 is ultra-rich, but they are almost all well-off and connected. The first American on the list is #94, and he is also the HRH Hereditary Prince Peter of Yugoslavia (age 27). He is hoping that Serbia restores their monarchy.

RThere are SO many fantastic places to visit in and around Leeds - the Tourist Info Office at Leeds City Railway Station has masses of leaflets as do all the libraries. Look out for the following:Kirkstall Abbey (the Shakespeare Festival will be staged there in the open air July/August - I defy anyone not to enjoy it - even those who have a deep hatred from school days!). Across the road, the Abbey House Folk Museum with its reconstruction of a Victorian street complete with shops. It's quite a fun place, with its museum of childhood and the old penny-in-the slot machines (What the Butler Saw, Fortune Telling, Music, etc.).The Royal ArmouriesThackray Medical MuseumArmley MillsTemple NewshamLotherton HallHarewood HouseRoundhay Park, Canal Gardens & Tropical WorldVenture a couple of miles further and discover Harrogate (go to the Turkish Baths there, if only to see the amazing building from the inside); Ripley (a little gem of a place, castle, church, beautiful walks throughout the Ripley estate, Ripley Ice Cream parlour); picturesque Knaresborough (take a rowing boat out on the river or visit Mother Shipton's Petrifying Well); another few miles you have Ilkley & Otley (brilliant walks and nice, busy little towns with markets), Skipton.In other directions you have Salts Mill in Saltaire (David Hockney permanent art collection and theatre sets, plus various floors of interesting things); York - so much of interest ..... etc., etc., etc.All the museums and stately homes have nice cafes and usually beautiful grounds/bird gardens to stroll around or have a picnic in.Re courses, all the colleges and community centres offer what amounts to a mass of every kind of evening class, from jewellery making, music, languages, belly dancing, excercise, DIY, furniture, hobbies, genealogy, local history, etc., but probably not during the summer holiday period. Look also on the Leeds City Council website for info and news of forthcoming events, Farmer's Markets, Fairs, etc.Leeds is about so much more than cinemas and shopping. Do a little homework, ask the locals, and I'm sure you'll find lots of things and brilliant places to keep you and your friends occupied.
