RLooking up the definition of a cult, this is what I found. "a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object such as the cult of St. Olaf • a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister like a network of Satan-worshiping cults • a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing. But I think Anthony Campbell said it well: "...one person's cult is another's religion; all religions begin life as cults. An alternative definition is that a cult is a religion which you happen to dislike." That seems to be the attitude of many on R&S, i.e. they dislike or hate Jehovah's Witnesses so call them a cult. The fact it is not true bothers them not in the least."I have often thought that the difference between a cult and a religion is an IRS ruling," said Ron Barrier. In other words, Jehovah's Witnesses are not a cult. "When someone uses the word 'cult,' it usually says more about them than the group," J. Gordon Melton, founder and director of The Institute for the Study of American Religion. I have deliberately used Jehovah's Witnesses as an example because they are accused of being a cult more frequently here on R&S tha any other religions, although Mormons get that a lot too.This may not be definitive answer to your question but sound reasoning on it.

RI lived in the US for six and a half years and had a chance to meet people whose first name is a surname. I can also recall older people such as Clint Eastwood (born 1931), whose real name is Clinton Eastwood Jr. That means his father (who is most likely dead) also carried with this tradition, that seems older than one could think. Clint´s first name is other people´s last names. Those choices are probably sound-based. It sounds good, you use it. I remember someone told me that sometimes they are used to honor a diseased ancestor whose last name did not pass to the next generation.If you ask me, I don´t think Taylor or Kennedy sound like a girl name at all. English is not my first language, though. To the person who posted this question:Were you born and raised in the US? Just out of curiosity, I would like to know.

RI can't speak for all.In fact, zen Buddhists, who are atheistic, may not have studied the bible, and nihilists, who are atheistic, but who are also anarchists, may have eschewed reading anything from the history of western culture.
