Rthere are 2 different groups of cast members, the featured players and the repertory playersthe featured players are new cast members. since they're not as experienced, usually, they're not given as many sketches and may not always play the main characters in a sketch. After a season, SNL determines whether to promote them to the repertory cast, fire them, or leave them as a featured player to give them another chance to prove themselves. Some exceptions include Amy Poehler, who's talent was so apparent that she was promoted midseason of her first year. the repertory players are experienced and have already shown their talent. their jobs are usually more secure, but chris parnell and horatio sanz were both fired due to budget cuts. they are given more roles and preference over the featured players
