In particular, I looked at how technology could support collaborative forms of work such as Communities of Practice when they are geographically distributed and how Communities of Practice could provide a counter balance to more techno-centric views of Knowledge Management.

I worked on an inter-disciplinary project involving the Departments of Computing, Management and Applied Social Studies. The aim of the project was to assess the state of development of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) in the North East of England. Later I worked on a project on the evaluation of the competitive impact of CIM in the North East.

Compétences professionnelles

Most of my recent work has focused on Communities of Practice and Distributed Collaborative Working. I am also interested in Knowledge Management, the problems of cross-cultural working, the extent to which technology can support virtual teams and communities and the application of Social Network Analysis to geographically distributed organisations.
