Is it true that spanish/Mexicans fought as confederates during the civil war?
Military at 17 December 2012 08:12:10
QI heard from a friend that during the time of the civil war some Mexican and Spanish Americans fought on the confederate side. Is this true?
RCol. Santos Benavides was so effective in Texas that his area of responsibility was called "The Texas Benavides Confederacy."Col. Ambrozio Jose Gonzales was the Chief of Artillery for the Department of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. He was Cuban-born and a Cuban revolutionary who had tried twice before the Civil War to overthrow the Spanish government in Cuba.Brigadier General Stand Watie was a Cherokee Chief who commanded a mixed force of Indians, Tex-Mexicans and whites and received a Confederate Congressional Award. There were actually 13,000 Indians from the Five Civilized Tribes who fought for the Confederacy. The Confederate Army was far from being the sea of lily-white Baptists most people assume.

What are the names of some legit talent agencies in New York?
Other - Entertainment at 23 May 2011 08:05:50
QHello, I'm in search of a talent agent/agency, and I would like to know how I could start a career in the entertainment industry. How exactly do I find an agent and become discovered by a talent manager or an actual "legit" talent scout? Also, how do I become a TV host? (On a show such as Entertainment tonight or Access Hollywood?) What are all the requirements? I'm interested in voice-overs, modeling, singing and acting. Can someone offer me some valuable advice and great pointers? I would really appreciate it.
RThose 4 options are completey different fields and all have their own requirements and agenciesModeling - for any of the NY agencies you need to be minimum 5'8" with measurements within 1" of 34-24-34 if you want to do runway/editorial/catalog or 42-42-42 or larger if you are plus size. These are the top NY agencies http://models.com/agencies/top/Acting - you can't get an agent until you have 3-4 years experience acting in leading roles in school plays, community theater, student films, etc and training from the best acting schools you can find. Theatrical agents do not represent beginners - especially in NY where there are people who have been acting for 5+ years who still can't get an agent. For TV/Film work you find legitimate agents on the SAG website http://www.sag.org/content/find-agent then choose NY from the pull down menu at the bottomVoice-overs -- you need to take voice-over classes then record a demo reel. Then you mail this out to voice-over agents that you can find on the AFTRA website http://www.aftra.org/ny_agents.htm Agents with a "V" or "All Areas" under their name represent Voice actorsSinging -- you can't get an agent for singing until you get a recording contract. To get a recording contract you have to be seen by the A&R person at a label or you send in a demo CD directly to the label. You need to perform wherever you can to get noticed - glee club, solos in your church choir, school musicals, sing the national anthem at little league games, etc. Participate in every single local talent show you can find. Look for open mic nights at local live music venues. Form a band with friends and perform everywhere. Audition for American Idol and Americas Got Talent every year. Create a myspace page and Youtube channel where you upload your songs and hope to get a few hundred thousand people. The more you are out there performing, the better chance you have of getting signed by a label, and will then get an agentMost TV hosts have degrees in journalism or communications. Guiliana Rancic on E! got her BA in Journalism at University of Maryland and her MA in Journalism from American University in Washington DC. Ryan Seacreast studied Journalism at University of Georgia (he didn't graduate) but was on college radio as a DJ whle he was in school. Kristin dos Santos on Entertainment Tonight got a BA in Communications from Loyola Marymount. Samantha Harris on The Insider has a BA in Journalism from Northwestern University. Adrianna Costa on Extra has a BA in Broadcast Journalism from University of Colorado. Leeza Gibbons got a BA in Journalism and Communications from the University of South Carolina.

Can anyone recommend me a good Love Novel?
Books & Authors at 25 May 2011 08:05:26
QI really like movies like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, scott pilgrim vs the world. Books along that line?
R1. Skylight Confessions by Alice Hoffman- At 17, Arlyn Singer walks into a mismatch of a marriage that she and her bridegroom, John, soon come to regret. True love turns up in the form of the window washer who tends to the Glass Slipper, the ironically named Connecticut residence where Arlyn and John share their less-than-fairy-tale marriage. Hoffman's brand of magical realism squeezes caring out of hard-to-reach places and ends up being a celebration of love.Conjugal Love by Alberto Moravia (Other Press). In this newly reprinted 1949 novel of love and betrayal, Silvio Baldeschi, a member of the idle rich in 1930s Italy, goes to an isolated Tuscan villa with his sensual wife, Leda, to finish his novel. In the process, he's forced to admit that he has not only overestimated his writing talents but underestimated his wife's need for passion.3. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill). Jacob Jankowski, the cranky resident of a retirement home, looks back on his years in the circus during the Depression and a love affair with Marlena, the offbeat star of the gritty circus and wife of the boss — a sadistic and unpredictable man.4. Julie and Romeo Get Lucky by Jeanne Ray (Harmony). First-time novelist Ray — mother of novelist Ann Patchett — spins a delightful story about the complications that ensue when Romeo Cacciamani and Julie Roseman fall in love at age 63. In this Shakespeare-inspired tale, published in paperback this year, the lovers are from feuding families who own the only floral shops in Somerville, Massachusetts.5. A Little Love Story by Roland Merullo (Vintage). Fans of Love Story, Erich Segal's tearjerker about the rich boy/poor girl relationship severed by death, won't want to miss this one. An accidental meeting leads to love between painter Jake Entwhistle and public relations assistant Janet Rossi, and to Jake's crusade to save her from dying of cystic fibrosis.6. Stardust by Neil Gaiman (HarperCollins). In this reissued young-adult magical fantasy, Tristran Thorn searches for a fallen star so he can win the love of Victoria, the prettiest girl in town. Along the way, he encounters witches and unicorns and learns valuable lessons about love in the land of Faerie.7. On Agate Hill by Lee Smith (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill). Gone With the Wind fans will want to get their parasols and hankies ready. Told indirectly through letters, diary entries, and court documents, the tale recounts the life of Molly Petree, a young southern woman who must pick up the pieces after the Civil War. Her father's friend becomes her benefactor and fills an important and mysterious role in her life.8. The Annotated Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; annotated, edited, and introduced by David M. Shapard (Anchor Books). True, it's a bit of a stretch to call Pride and Prejudice "new." But Shapard, who has a Ph.D. in European history from Berkeley, offers more than 2,300 annotations alongside the text of the novel Jane Austen called "my own darling child" and that has long been one of her most popular. By providing definitions for hundreds of archaic words, fleshing out the historical context for Austen's characters, and offering a chronology of events, Shapard acts as a fascinating guide to this classic novel about love among the English landed gentry.9. Dear John by Nicholas Sparks (Warner Books). The bestselling author of The Notebook and other books that pierce your heart is back with a bittersweet story, set in 2000, about opposites who attract but can't quite get their timing right. John Tyree is the young guy with the blue-collar background; Savannah Lynn Curtis is the University of North Carolina student with money. But somehow the tale remains a testimony to love.10. Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos (Plume). When Martin Grace, whose name "shares all but three letters with 'Cary Grant,'" walks into Cornelia Brown's Philadelphia café, the 31-year-old romantic-movie buff thinks she has found true love. But Brown has yet to meet Clare, Martin's 11-year-old daughter. A child of divorce who lives with her unstable mother, Clare teaches Cornelia about real love. Poet Marisa de los Santos' touching debut novel is slated to become a movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker.

What do you think Illegal immigrants bring diseases into States ?
Immigration at 11 September 2007 08:09:41
QAs our nation slowly is overrun by illegal immigrants, we must realize there are not just societal and economic issues, but medical concerns as well. It has become second nature for people to sit back and make justifications for allowing illegal immigration. However, unless they acknowledge the consequences they are not likely to understand its full implications. Investor's Business Daily reported on Aug. 29, that Francisco Santos, an illegal immigrant, was arrested at Gwinnett Medical Center on Aug. 24 when he refused treatment for an active case of contagious tuberculosis and threatened to leave the hospital and return to Mexico. Santos will get his wish when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents deport him back home to receive medical help there, instead of taxing our services. Unfortunately, cases like Santos' are not random occurrences. A tuberculosis outbreak involving 131 immigrants occurred at a South Carolina poultry plant just a few weeks ago. According to webmd.com, tuberculosis is a highly contagious viral infection spread through air particles by an infected person when he or she sneezes, coughs or spits. Frontpagemagazine.com reported Aug. 17, "It is estimated that each person infected with TB will infect 10 others." This is a huge biological threat to the citizens of the United States. New strains of tuberculosis that are resistant to drug treatment have developed, and research by the Indiana University of Medicine affirmed it was introduced into the United States by Mexican Nationals. http://media.www.kstatecollegian.com/media/storage/paper1022/news/2007/09/11/Opinion/Illegal.Immigrants.Bring.Diseases.Into.States-2960741.shtml

What is Sailor And Lula about?
Comics & Animation at 16 April 2011 02:04:37
QI heard about a story called Sailor And Lula. Is it good? What age do you recommend it for? What is it about?
RWild at Heart is a 1990 American film written and directed by David Lynch, and based on Barry Gifford's 1989 novel Wild at Heart: The Story of Sailor and Lula. Both the book and the film revolve around Sailor Ripley and Lula Pace Fortune, a young, doomed couple from Cape Fear, North Carolina who decide to go on the run from her domineering, over-protective mother As a result of her mother's plans, the mob becomes involved.Part of the plot: Lovers Lula and Sailor are separated after he is jailed for killing – in self-defense – a man who attacked him with a knife; the assailant was hired by Lula's mother, Marietta Fortune. Upon Sailor's release, Lula picks him up at the prison where she hands him his snakeskin jacket. They go to a hotel where she reserved a room, make love and go to see a heavy metal band. At the club, Sailor gets into a fight with a man who accosts Lula, and then leads the band in a rendition of Elvis Presley's "Love Me". Later, back in the room, after making love again, Sailor and Lula finally decide to run away to California, breaking Sailor's parole. Lula's mother arranges for private detective Johnnie Farragut — her on-off boyfriend — to find them and bring them back. Unbeknown to Johnnie, however, Marietta also hires gangster Marcelles Santos to track them, and kill Sailor.I'd recommend it to 15+

Who invented the "first flying machine"? - Americans, Canadians, and Brazilians no need to reply :)?
Trivia at 03 December 2006 11:12:45
QHaving a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_flying_machine you can see a total of 27 different people can claimed to be the inventors for one reason or the other. I do know that Americans and Canadians are taught on their schools that the Americans Wright Brothers were the big inventors, but in Brazil they are taught it was Santos Dumont. So according to your country, who was chosen to be the "real" inventor? Please mention your country name. PLEASE, this is not intended to know anyone's opinion, or to try to seek any truth, but rather to research on different views on a country by country perspective. Thank you.
RI'm from Australia and was taught the American Wright Brothers (Orville and ??) were the first to fly an airplane. In North Carolina maybe.Been a while since I was in school.
