ROliver Goldsmith (author of the play She Stoops To Conquer) in his poem "The Deserted Village".This is the intellectuals' assessment of the effects of the Industrial Revolution, as people moved, off the land, from the villages into the cities. Britain was the first country to have an Industrial Revolution and it therefore attracted the most attention in how it dehumanised people.The French writer Alexis de Tocqueville described Manchester of the 19th century "In the city, humanity attains its most complete development and its most brutish; here civilisation works its miracles and civilised man is turned back almost into savage".I pick up the poem some 18 lines before the quote, so you can see where he is coming from. The poem opens describing Auburn, a rural idyll in the Garden of England, as it once was and switches to how it now is om decline and why, and what Goldsmith thinks of that.Sweet, smiling village, loveliest of the lawn, Thy sports are fled, and all thy charms withdrawn! Amidst thy bowers the tyrant's hand is seen, And desolation saddens all thy green: One only master grasps the whole domain, And half a tillage stints thy smiling plain.
